What are we looking at? The steel frame is made from Reynolds tubing, brazed into fairly typical racing bike geometry. The seat tube is laid-back at a shallow angle, giving the rider good leverage to muscle around a heavy gear. This is a medium to large bike, and the size seems odd. In this era seatposts were not intended to extend very far beyond the frame, likewise the handlebar stem is just a few inches above the top tube.
The saddle is a Brooks, handmade in England.

This was my Mom’s bike; she purchased it from a friend just before he headed off to war. It appears to be pretty much original, except for the tires and an added kickstand. Any suggestions on where to sell such a bike? Would try www. Craigslist is an option, but it draws a lot of spammers. I prefer the CABE between those. You may end up having to box and ship the bike if you sell online.
Local online sales are notorious for lower prices. Do you have any pictures of the bike? I sent an email yesterday, but I think it bounced – didn’t notice that your email was a “no-reply”. I do have a number of pics of the bike-let me know how to get them to you. Pre serial numbers on these are difficult to pin down because the serial number records burned in a fire at the Schwinn factory. Feel free to email pictures of the bike to: pelikan gmail.

Q-Recently I saw a Schwinn Whizzer bike that no longer is being manufactured. Where can I buy such a bike? Is there a collectors club or source I can contact? A-Schwinn never made a Whizzer. The kits were manufactured by Dietrich Kohlsaat, who worked for Schwinn before he started his own firm, the Whizzer Motor Co. It was Kohlsaat who developed and designed the Whizzer kit to fit on almost any make of inch balloon-tire bicycle to convert it into a motorbike.
There’s an easy way and a more time-consuming method to find out the year your Schwinn Stingray was made. Modern Stingrays — those made in the 21st century — have a date code stamped into a specific area of the bike. Date codes, if you know how to read them, will tell you what year Schwinn manufactured the bike.
Older, classic Stingrays do not have date codes. Instead, you will have to find and use their serial numbers to determine their manufacturing year. Flip your bike over and look for a date code imprinted in the metal of the frame near the left pedal.
I was wondering how do i read a date code on Schwinn tires for example a stamp of C(30)2 or I’ve also seen UT and the three crossed circles.
The Chicago Schwinns were among the most bomb-resistant bikes ever built, and they were built with unique technology. The head tubes look as if they were fillet brazed , but they weren’t. The head tube and the tapered segments that lead into the the top tube and down tube were actually made from two special forgings that were “electro-forged” welded together down the centerline, then ground smooth, so the seam is not usually visible.
There are necked-down parts that fit into the top tube and down tube, like internal lugs. Marc S. Muller has a very detailed explanation of this process, in his superb article: Inside the Varsity , which is now on this site. Mike Rother has an excellent overview of the fillet-brazed lightweights , also on this site. The flat-bladed forks were also forged. The Typhoon probably dates from the late ’50’s or ’60’s.
If I recall, it was what Schwinn called a ” cantilever ” frame, where the seat stays pass by the seat cluster and continue on in a graceful curve to join the bottom of the head tube. Older Schwinn ” cruisers “, such as the Excelsior that was the inspiration of the first mountain bikes, used a straight lower top tube from the bottom of the head tube to the seat tube. They also manufactured their own rims in the Chicago factory, the “Schwinn Tubular Rim”. These rims, like the Chicago frames, were among the sturdiest ever built.
